It's My Birthday Weekend

I'm not even going to lie-

birthdays were a huge deal growing up. Mom adorned the house with streamers and the "birthday banner" while I slept. The "birthday candle" was always burning on the counter when I went down for breakfast. On my sister's 21st she came home to find 21 boxes hidden around the house- all with 21 things inside (i.e. $21 giftcards, ) You get the drift. Well, I'm carrying on the tradition.

So far so good.
I got out of my meeting an hour early, no awkward drivers at the 5-way stop by our house, and freshly-baked cookies when I got home!
3 for 3!

Haphazard Post Including Images From My Weekend

My grandmother's pin from the 1920's

The deer here aren't afraid of anything. Even me. I found this one chowing down on shrubs in the backyard. She looked up at me for a second aiming my camera at her, then went right back to eating.

Is there any better place than the library?

No. There is not.
Happy Monday

My mother was once asked (at the Alameda swap meet)
"Is that a tooth?"
"No." She replied. "It is an imperfect pearl."
Inherited from my great-aunt Rene.

So this afternoon the three of us (the 'tooth', my mother and I) set off for Fremont.
Destination: Dusty Strings.
In search of sheet music for my mother's new harp.

I shan't be pulling the levers there but I shall be a very good back-seat driver.

Sometimes I miss our times in Stilly.

I confess. I'm in a love/love relationship with edamame. I could eat it every hour-on the hour- for the rest of my natural life. Straight from the pod (nothing special) maybe a little salt.
This is good- considering the bag we bought at Costco last night is bigger than my torso.

Tonight we found out that Erik's cousin Robert is in the hospital with a staff infection in his knee. At least they think it's a staff infection. The doctor keeps calling in the other doctors to "take a look." Hmmm...that's reassuring.

Robert is one of the most genuine people I know. He doesn't waste his time trying to impress anyone (except for his darling wife- he pretty much fell head-over-heels for her.) If your truck broke down way out in the sticks and you needed a ride- he would be there to pick you up. (Erik knows this first hand.) He's loyal and trustworthy and he's not afraid to tell you what he thinks.
Get well soon Robert! We love you.

He said it...not me:

A few summers ago in La Serena, I walked along the beach with a friend.
She told me:
Don't look for seashells- let them find you.
Here are the items that found me today.

"boots" on the floor of my classroom

a purple flower on the playground

chilean pesos at the bottom of my dresser drawer

I'm driving. Twisting around the lake and watching runners' sillhouettes as
they jog by the water. The sight is so beautiful (glassy water-blood orange sun) that I must park , get out of the car, and take pictures that don't do it justice. I must have 25 sub-par pictures of the exact same scene. I don't know why I do it.
Perhaps I want to preserve the moment to look back on later- perhaps I want to jump in the photo and stay there forever (Erik will come too)-or maybe I only want to watch other people hustle- to be still while they run.

People...Seriously.
